Overview

Many patients are presented in clinical practice as an emergency. In such cases, its is essential to maximise the diagnostic information by performing a complete haematological assessment as quickly as possible. This webinar will present and discuss which are the clinical questions which cannot be answered by the in-clinic haematology analyser but can be answered by the microscopic examination of a blood smear. A significant part of the webinar will include the presentation and interactive discussion of clinical cases aiming to put in practice the principles presented during the earlier part of this on line seminar.

Learning Objectives:

1. Erythrocytes: Learn which are the most important morphological abnormalities which can answer the questions: a) is the anaemia regenerative or non-regenerative? b) are any findings that can identify the cause of the anaemia?
2. Leukocytes: a) are any findings indicative of active, marked or overwhelming inflammation? b) any findings consistent with a disease causing immune stimulation? c) any evidence of neoplasia?
3. Platelets: Is the platelet count from the haematology analyser accurate? Is the patient truly thrombocytopenic?
